The Kerepek Making.

Kerepek (chips) is a local and traditional fast food made by malaysian. There are so many type of Kerepek in Tanjung Karang, some of them are made from Banana fruit and some of them are made from Cassava and also from a fruit called Sukun.

Here are some pictures of how they made it.

A pile of cassavas.

These cassavas are not originally from Tanjung Karang. A villager there said they have to go to the market at town nearby to buy or the Market-man will come to their village to send them. The price is quite cheap. 1kg of cassava = Rm1.50.

Skin removal process

In this stage, they have to remove the skin of the cassava because the skin cannot be fried together.

Chips Slicing

After they finished remove the skins of the cassava, they will send like a bucket of it to the slicing part where they will slice it up into chips. Through my observation, the chips were totally thin. I think this is to make sure that people are easily eating it.

The Chips marinade

The marinate process require a bag of turmeric powder and salt. They will keep them for 10-15 minutes before the frying process.

Frying process

Because of the size and thickness, they will fry the chips like 5-10 minutes only until the 'color' is good and and crunchy enough for the customer.

Drying process.

They have a machine like in the picture where they put the fried chips into it for the drying process. It might takes a few minutes to really dry before sending it to the packaging section.

How to play.

This game is normally performed in the open area or on a big stage. Before the dance begins, Village shaman would burn incense and recite incantations to give power to the horses. He uses raw eggs, flowers, grass, and water for the show.
Being controlled by a "Danyang" who determines the rhythm of the dance, each dancer will ride on their horse. When the music began to resonate, dancers, led by "danyang" to go into the ring. Music begins with the slow pace and rather tedious. Each dancer will ride and drive horses, according to the pattern determined by the pace and rhythm of the song.
When the music became faster, the horses will trot faster. Sometimes the organizers will block cunning cloth for players pass. Dancers can perform movements that strange and unusual such as jumping as high as six feet. Dancers danced for two hours until they are dazzled by the greatness of their movements. When drunk, they sometimes would dream of riding a real horse as he danced to the accompaniment of music. As a result, they try to pursue music. This condition is called "up sheik". If things get too wild and can not be controlled, the Village Shaman will instruct the guards which stationed at every corner of the field to catch and knock them to the ground, and so will the Shaman will read spells to heal them back.

The Kite Making

The Kite making activity was conducted by a villager around there named Jep and his brother Man, which are professionals kite-flyer. They are so talented in making kites and Wau. Wau is like a kite but it is bigger  and huge. Usually people who play Wau are professionals because Wau needs a better skill and technique than a normal kite and because of its size and strength, a Wau can fly higher and tougher when it is struck by the hard wind and hot sunlight.

Here are some pictures of the process in the kite making which we participated.

Wood Choosing

The very first yet very important step is too choose a fine and strong bamboo wood before chop them off to sticks. This is because kite is flying up on the air and exposed to strong wind and sun ray. The stronger the wood, the longer the kite can stay up on the air.

Stick Sizing

On this process, the kite-maker has to make the bone for the body and the wings. Both of the sticks have a different length. The wing must be longer than the bone because long wings could make the kite goes higher as a factor of wind it breaking through.

Refining The Bones

In this stage of the process, the kite-maker needs to refine the stick as thin as possible. The finer the sticks, the lighter the kite. The kite-maker has to be carefully smoothen the stick so that the bone will not easily break. So it is a 50-50 work that need our patience.

Bones Balancing

After the refining process, the kite-maker will do the balancing. He has to make sure that the curve points between the sticks (wings) are equal and deep. This is very important because once the point is not equally right, the kite will face a difficulty to fly high.

Bones Binding

After the balancing and refining processes are finished, the body and the wing need to be bind together.   The binder need to tie the two sticks tightly.

Adding Sail and Decoration

The last process is to paste a piece of paper to cover the whole kite. This paper is not a regular paper, it is called Siamese paper. Its thin and light which make it good for a  kite. The paper does not work only as a decoration where people can add as many color as they can, but also as a sail. Some professionals will crush the paper first so that the paper would not get tight and torns as they are exposed to the sun.

Let's play!

We stayed at Haji Dorani Homestay which placed in the middle of a beautiful paddy field. Some villagers nearby make their home as a homestay under the name of Haji Dorani. A lot of activities were provided for us and they were some new culture that I never experienced and seen before. It was fun and exciting to learn new things and other people's culture because our hometown and their's are totally different.
